Influx of commercial Twitter Spammers
I have been noticing a lot lately that I have been getting one to two new followers per day on my twitter account. They have standard commercial names marketing their business. Twitter has been around for a little while now and it is becomming a more mainstream place to hang out. One of the nicest features is that you can use your twitter account to post new updates on your facebook account. That makes their name move to the front page of thousands of feeds on thousands of people’s facebook accounts. Kudos to you.
I would like to say that it is Twitter’s own advertising and self marketing tips that have been causing this influx of new users, but I think it’s more likely that people have figured out how easy it is to ‘spam follow’ twitter users. I use Twitter to try and market the businesses that I work for but I refuse to follow the lead that is to follow as many people as you can.
The theory behind following as many people as possible is that you will get some of the users to follow you in return. There have been tests done and Dosh Dosh highlighted this in their research of how to market with Twitter. They found that one of the ‘spam follow’ account had about an 20% return for the amounts of people that would also follow them. So say you follow 1000 people on twitter you will get about 200 followers of you in return. Not bad considering that you have the potential to reach a solid amount of people’s front pages and feeds with that follower base.
Let’s get to why this is a potential problem for all of us twitter users. Myspace, was the ‘it’ place to be on the internet until marketers found their way to spam the heck out of the myspace users. After that it paved the way for a better social networking site (Facebook) to take the majority of the traffic and become the next best thing. If Twitter doesn’t take car of the problem with their spammers they too will likely have the same fate of myspace. As for me, maybe I should hop on the bandwagon while Twitter still stands.

I have had your recent experience too. I don’t mind them following me, but I won’t return the follow. Another thing some of these guys don’t recognise is that slamming links and products down our throats won’t help their causes (although according to your stats I may be wrong), but will hav them identified as spammers. Another blog I’ve read goes as far as to call Guy Kawasaki a spammer for pretty much only sending out links to things. I wonder what Twitter can do? Perhaps it is up to us as users to be savvy about who we follow.
